The Aviator, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Finding Neverland, The Motorcycle Diaries and Vera Drake are all in contention for Best Film at the 2005 BAFTAs, to be awarded in London on 12 February.

The Aviator has received 14 nominations, the second highest number ever at the BAFTAs, topped only by Gandhi in 1986.

Vera Drake, widely regarded as Mike Leigh's best film to date in an illustrious career, received 11 nominations. Leigh said 'It is a film that has successfully caught people's emotions and has tried to tell the story in a subtle way, and it's working. People have been running up to me in the street to tell me how much they have loved it. It's caught something.' Imelda Staunton is predictably nominated as Best Actress, and is up against Kate Winslet  - who received two nominations, for Finding Neverland and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Charlize Theron and Ziyi Zhang.

Shona Auerbach, director of Dear Frankie, and Amma Asante, writer and director of A Way Of Life, are both nominated for the prestigious Carl Foreman Award which honoiurs new British talent.

Missing from the list are Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby and Alexander Payne's Sideways, both of which are expected to be prominent at the Oscars.
