UK Production Still Healthy    BACK TO PREVIOUS PAGE

Despite the fears caused by the UK government's decision to close a tax relief loophole earlier in the year, production in the UK is as strong as it was during last year's boom.

A number of high-profile films running into difficulties - particularly John Madden's Tulip Fever which is still postponed, and The Libertine which was 'rescued' by Isle of Man Film - had led to speculation that the industry would run into problems. However, Screendaily.com reports that there are currently 15 films in production that qualify as British, including the high profile fourth Harry Potter film and Batman Begins. Working Title Films is currently shooting Nanny McPhee, starring Emma Thompson and Colin Firth, as well as being in pre-production on Stephen Daldry's Everest and rumoured to be on the verge of signing Keira Knightley (pictured left) for a big screen adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Two football-themed films are also in production; Michael Winterbottom's Goal! and The Yank (formerly known as Hooligans).

With all the current activity, it does look as though the rumours of the UK film industry's death have been greatly exaggerated...
