Mike Leigh's Venice award-winning Vera Drake took the lion's share of honours at the 2004 British Independent Film Awards, announced in London on 30 November. The film was named Best Film, Leigh himself was Best Director, Imelda Staunton and Phil Davis were Best Actor and Best Actress respectively, Eddie Marsan was named Best Supporting Actor, and producer Simon Channing-Williams accepted the Best Achievement in Production award. Vera Drake is shortlisted for European Film of the Year, to be announced in Barcelona on 11 December, where Imelda Staunton is also in the running for Best Actress.
School of Life, directed by Jake Polonsky, won the Nokia/British Council award for Best Short Film.
