A variety of organisations like precise figures from which to measure a film's commercial success. Distributors like to know how many tickets are sold and the exact amount of money taken by cinema owners as a result of their films. Rights-holders (producers, directors, etc) like precise figures showing how successful their films are. Public bodies like detailed information about films they have supported financially.
The Automatic Distribution Support Database
This Media Programme database lists by country the number of paying admissions declared by the distribution companies for their non-national European releases in a calendar year. The total admissions are then used to calculate the Automatic Distribution Support a company can receive. Records are available from 1996 onwards up until 2007 when the previous funding programme ended.

The LUMIERE Database
Box office performance (numbers of admissions) of films released in European cinemas since 1996. The search can be tailored by country, title or director.
The LUMIERE database systematically compiles data available in the various European Audiovisual Observatory member states. However, the Observatory is unable to verify the accuracy of the data provided by national sources. The figures contained in the database should therefore be considered indicative.
The database also contains various calculation functions designed to facilitate market analysis (analysis of market share, comparison between supply and demand, degree of concentration of film attendance, exportation rates, film attendance charts). For various methodological and technical reasons, these tools are not available online. The Observatory can provide tailor-made reports.
