![]() Fresh from success at the Berlin Film Festival 2009, we catch up with up and coming filmmaker Daniel Elliott
ProfileDaniel was born in the North East of England. After leaving school he worked in a variety of roles before studying film at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. His Graduation film Getting There was very well received picking up several prizes including a Royal Television Society award.
In Estonia in 2003 Daniel made Fender Bender. It has screened at over forty international film festivals and has received several awards and nominations, including the PRIX U.I.P. Best European Short Film Award at Tampere International Film Festival in 2004, and a nomination for the Best European Short Film at the European Academy Awards in the same year.
In 2006 he made The Making of Parts, which premiered in Competition at 63, Venice Film Festival where it was awarded the PRIX U.I.P. Best European Short Film Award, and another nomination for the Best European Short Film at the European Academy Awards the same year. It has since received several more awards and has screened at over 65 international film festivals.
In 2007 he produced and directed four short documentaries for Channel 4. He is currently in development with third films on his debut feature film, supported by U.K.F.C. Development Fund and MEDIA. He is also working on another short film project.
His new film Jade premiered in Competition at 59th Berlin International Film Festival 2009 where it was awarded the Silver Bear for best short film.
Daniel says ‘It was great news when we received word that Jade had been selected for competition at the 59th Berlin International Film Festival. It’s always a good start to premiere at an A-list festival.
I originally attended in 2003 so I had an understanding of what to expect but it’s always different when you have a film in competition. Berlin is a unique city with a great atmosphere and this is reflected in the festival.
The short film programmes were bold and interesting and the receptive audiences confirmed this - each programme was completely sold out.’
British Council support The British Council recognised Dan’s talent early on, and have supported him in various ways; to attend Krakow Film Festival with his first film Fender Bender in 2004 with a travel grant, and by giving him print and travel grants to take The Making of Parts to Venice in 2006, where it won the Prix UIP for Best Short Film. The Council also gave Dan print and travel grants to support his participation in Berlin with Jade.
